Recalling the stories of some players whose careers started in Kansas City — and didn’t last long

While the NFL’s summer lull persists, ESPN recently released an article spotlighting seven individuals who participated in only one NFL game. Reading through it, I found myself contemplating how many players had a fleeting moment in a solitary Kansas City Chiefs game.

As I perused the list, four distinct stories captivated my attention.

Guard Tre’ Stallings

Drafted by the Chiefs in the sixth round of the 2006 NFL Draft, the 6-foot-4, 317-pound talent from Mississippi had a brief stint with the team. He was active for four Kansas City games towards the conclusion of the 2007 season. Notably, he played as a backup during the Week 17 match against the New York Jets, where the Chiefs wrapped up the season with a 4-12 record, succumbing to a 13-10 overtime loss, and he incurred a false start penalty during the game.

Following his time with the Chiefs, Stallings spent the next two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens but didn’t make another appearance in an NFL game. Transitioning to a career in sports administration, his journey included roles such as the director of player engagement for the Tennessee Titans, director of player development at the University of Illinois, and an assistant director for enforcement for the NCAA. In 2020, he achieved the position of associate commissioner of Conference USA.

Quarterback Mike Elkins

When delving into the 34-year span between the Chiefs’ use of a first-round draft pick on quarterback Todd Blackledge in 1983 and the emergence of Patrick Mahomes in 2017, one intriguing figure to mention is Elkins. Despite being selected in the second round of the 1989 draft, he held the 32nd overall pick — a status that would have secured him a first-round spot in more recent seasons.

Regrettably, the former Wake Forest quarterback fell short of meeting the expectations associated with his draft position. In Week 12 of his rookie season, with Kansas City dominating the Houston Oilers with a 34-0 lead, Elkins was unexpectedly called upon to replace Steve DeBerg. He threw two passes during the game— one resulted in a five-yard completion, while the other ended in an interception.

Although Elkins later had stints with both the Oilers and the Cleveland Browns, as well as the Sacramento Surge of the World League of American Football, that lone game marked the entirety of Elkins’ NFL career. Today, he serves as a regional sales manager for Biotronik, a company specializing in medical electronics.

Placekicker Justin Medlock

As the 2007 NFL Draft unfolded, the Chiefs’ franchise, accustomed to nearly half its history featuring either Jan Stenerud or Nick Lowery as the reliable placekicker, maintained high expectations for excellence in that position. However, apart from occasional ventures with aging veterans like Pete Stoyanovich or Morten Anderson, the team struggled to consistently achieve the desired results.

Lawrence Tynes had shown promise as a young kicker, but in three seasons, he never ranked higher than 16th in field-goal accuracy. Tynes eventually departed for the New York Giants, where he went on to win two Super Bowl rings over the next six seasons. In response, Kansas City’s general manager, Carl Peterson, utilized a fifth-round draft pick to acquire Medlock from UCLA.

However, Medlock’s tenure with the Chiefs was short-lived. In Week 1 of the 2007 season, he went 1-for-2 in his only game, a 20-3 loss to the Houston Texans. Following this performance, Peterson made the decision to replace Medlock with third-year player Dave Rayner for the next 10 games, concluding the season with 43-year-old John Carney.

Unlike Stallings and Elkins, Medlock did find opportunities with another NFL team. In 2012, the Carolina Panthers became his fifth team to sign him, marking the second team to field him. Despite appearing in 10 games that season, he was released in November after missing field goals in three consecutive contests, marking the end of his NFL career.

Yet, Medlock persevered in pursuit of his dream. After a brief stint with the Oakland Raiders in 2013, he returned to the Canadian Football League, where he had been a significant contributor for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2011. His journey culminated in a triumphant moment, as he played a crucial role in helping the Winnipeg Blue Bombers secure the Grey Cup in 2019, serving as both a placekicker and a punter. Now 39, he remains a free agent, a testament to his resilience and dedication to the game.

Quarterback Tyler Bray

In the annals of NFL trivia, an intriguing tidbit awaits as a potential bar bet victory: Tyler Bray holds the distinction of being the first backup quarterback to step in for Patrick Mahomes during an NFL game. Often overshadowed by the assumption that Chad Henne assumed this role (having become Kansas City’s backup in 2018), the reality is that Bray took over for Mahomes in the final game of the 2017 season against the Denver Broncos.

Initially signed as an undrafted free agent from Tennessee in 2013, Bray dedicated five seasons to the Chiefs, with one year spent on injured reserve and another on the non-football-injury reserve list. Throughout 2016 and 2017, the team frequently activated and deactivated him from the roster, underscoring Head Coach Andy Reid’s belief in Bray’s potential contributions.

During the Broncos game, with the Chiefs holding a 24-10 lead midway through the fourth quarter after a Terrance Mitchell interception, Reid made the pivotal decision to grant Bray his inaugural NFL playing time. Unfortunately, Bray fumbled the first snap of his debut, resulting in a 38-yard touchdown return for the Broncos. The ensuing drive was unproductive, with Bray’s only pass falling incomplete. Denver capitalized, tying the game at 24 with 2:53 left. Mahomes then orchestrated his first game-winning drive, setting up Harrison Butker for a 30-yard field goal with four seconds remaining.

Bray continued his journey with Matt Nagy to the Chicago Bears when Nagy transitioned from the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach to head coach in 2018. While Nagy kept Bray around for a period, his second and final NFL game occurred in Week 10 of 2020, where he appeared for five snaps, completing one pass for 18 yards on five attempts as the Bears fell to the Minnesota Vikings 19-13.

Over his nine-year NFL tenure (including a brief stint on the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad in 2021), Bray participated in two games, completing one pass on six attempts for 18 yards while losing a fumble. Despite this limited on-field action, Spotrac estimates his earnings at $4.4 million. Similar to Medlock, the 31-year-old Bray currently stands as a free agent, his NFL journey awaiting its next chapter.
